Argentine Tango Steps
Side Steps in Argentine Tango
There are two principal side steps in Argentine Tango:
The Side Step is a frequently used first or opening step in argentine tango especially in a crowded milonga where a back step could hit the couple behind and therefore be dangerous. The leader will therefore start a step combination with a side step with their left foot. Following the side step to the left, the leader has a number of choices about how to proceed. They could keep their weight on their left foot and then step forward with their right. Or they could do a Side Chase or a Side Rock Side Chase: If a follower, step sideways to the right, bring left foot beside the right and put weight on it. If a leader, step sideways to the left, bring right foot beside the left and put your weight on it. At this point, the leader has a lot of choices on how to proceed. |
Side Rock: If a follower, step side right and bring left foot beside the right with no weight on it, step side left and follow through with right to the neutral position. If a leader, step side left and bring right foot beside the left with no weight on it, step side right and follow through with left to the neutral position. |
